Dries Van Noten Spring 2012 Menswear

Dries never disappoints when it comes to fresh ideas of chic menswear. He’s also the colour master and everyone knows that. Colours and Belgian designers are not the most likely combination in general, but Dries somehow manages to built a fashion empire on that very idea. Yes, his company’s annual revenue is mainly contributed by his clothing sales unlike most luxury labels that rely heavily on accessories.

Spring 2012 was no exemption. The colour palette was as dynamic as it got. Dark shades existed in many different tones, and were counterbalanced by occasional bright striped in what-I-would-consider healthy shades. Neither too bright nor too loud, just the right amount of splashes.

As far as the silhouettes were concerned, I thought they were interestingly healthy. There was no extreme skinny silhouette in sight, and certainly no baggy gimmicks. The pleated pants were particularly super chic, kinda remind you that they can look handsome and are not meant only for super large waist. I must mention though that part of this collection felt a little dejavu. I mean it was hard not to think of Lanvin when seeing those pieces in silk.

I’m not sure if I dig the highlighted seam details, but I thought they were a nice touche, looked like a colour-blocking in a way. The contrast of the black-strip seams against the brighter shades would certainly make a good magazine editorial. Well, even if it didn’t, it at least got people talking which is way more positive than leaving people unresponsive.
